Public relations is more than managing information or shaping perceptions; it’s about aligning with people, cultures, and values. This fact came to the fore once again during a recent interaction with two US-based students participating in a career day at Mercom who, among other things, were keen to learn how cultural values shape PR practices globally.

Professionals who have worked in the Middle East in both communications and media understand that cultural nuances and sensitivities are central to effective communication strategies in this region. Culture and religion are deeply interwoven into daily life in the Middle East, and this is reflected in business and social life and even influences how public communications are crafted and received. Every media house or PR agency is provided with a list of dos and don’ts to guide how they craft their content. A few years ago, the use of certain words in articles was off-limits for journalists working in this region, as they could potentially offend readers, even though those same words might be considered acceptable in other countries.

Also, during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims observe fasting, the focus is on spiritual rejuvenation and reflection. Activities such as product launches or parties that might contradict the solemnity of the month are typically postponed in the region. This is an example of why it is always important for PR practitioners in any market to be aware of these nuances and incorporate them into strategies that resonate with their audience while maintaining cultural integrity.

So, beyond cultural awareness, how does one succeed in this region, brimming with opportunities that are fueled by the rapid growth of renewable energy, technology, and infrastructure? The answer lies in building relationships. While trust and rapport are essential everywhere, in the Middle East, they are often the deciding factor. Through our experience, Mercom has learned that building meaningful relationships with both government officials and journalists can truly make or break your success in this market.

This deeper level of engagement is not optional, it is foundational to building credibility and ensuring long-term success. At Mercom Capital Group, we deeply understand these values.
