Corporate Funding for Energy Storage Companies Totaled $19.9 Billion in 2024, Reports Mercom Capital Group

Source Galileo, a renewable energy project developer, announced the sale of a 40 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project to Trina Solar International System Business Unit (ISBU), Trina Solar’s downstream project development arm.

The Rigifa project is located south of Aberdeen city centre in Scotland, U.K. The BESS project secured planning consent from the Aberdeen City Council in November 2024.

According to the company, the project will be a containerized battery storage facility accommodating up to 56 containers. It is strategically situated near the Redmoss substation for optimal grid connection.

PKF Francis Clark and Energy Law Unlimited served as advisors to Source Galileo for the transaction.

“We are delighted to acquire the Rigifa BESS project from Source Galileo with Nicholas Good from our UK Business Development team leading the transaction,” said Sasha Georgievski, Business Director of Trina Solar ISBU UK & Ireland. “This acquisition marks a significant step in Trina Solar ISBU’s strategy to deliver energy storage projects that support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. We look forward to working with Source Galileo and are exploring further opportunities for future collaboration.”

In January, Trina Solar International System Business Unit also acquired a 65 MWp solar project portfolio from Emeren Group, a solar project developer. The solar portfolio comprises three projects located across various regions in Germany and has the potential to integrate BESS in the future.

According to Mercom’s Annual and Q4 2024 Funding and M&A Report for Energy Storage and Smart Grid, 38 energy storage projects were acquired in 2024 compared to 28 project M&A transactions in 2023.

Last week, GridStor, a developer and operator of grid-scale battery energy storage systems, announced the acquisition of a 150 MW/300 MWh BESS project in Texas from Balanced Rock Power, a U.S.-based solar and energy storage project developer.
