Varco Energy Acquires 100 MW Old Allen Road BESS

Varco Energy, a U.K.-based battery storage asset owner and operator, has announced the acquisition of the 100 MW Old Allen Road Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), also known as Bradford West 2, in West Yorkshire. The 100 MW grid-scale facility in West Yorkshire is designed to deliver essential flexibility and grid-balancing services to the U.K. electricity network.

Evolution Infrastructure acted as Financial Advisor on the sale of the Old Allen Road Battery Energy Storage System to Varco Energy.

The project is set to provide frequency and voltage regulation, reserve capacity, and load-shifting services, functions essential to integrating renewable energy and maintaining a stable, reliable power supply as the U.K. advances toward a net-zero system.

Operated by Varco Energy, a battery storage company backed by Adaptogen Capital, the project will also contribute to the U.K. government’s ambition of deploying 23–30 GW of energy storage by 2030.

Jack Lowe, Director at Evolution Infrastructure, said: “We are delighted to have acted as financial advisor to the sellers on this milestone transaction. Bradford West 2 is a flagship BESS project that will make a meaningful contribution to the UK’s energy transition. This successful disposal, during what has been a turbulent sales environment during grid reform, highlights continued investor appetite for high-quality battery storage assets, and EvoInfra’s dedicated approach to facilitating transactions.”

According to Mercom’s 1H and Q2 2025 Funding and M&A Report for Energy Storage report, announced Energy Storage project financing increased 168% year-over-year in 2025.

In September, DRI, an Amsterdam-based renewable energy company and a subsidiary of the DTEK Group, announced the acquisition of rights to build a 112 MW/448 MWh battery energy storage system from Greenvolt Group, a renewable energy project developer.
