Energy Vault Acquires 150 MW Battery Storage Project

Energy Vault, a utility-scale energy storage project developer, announced the acquisition and planned development of the SOSA Energy Center, a 150 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage system located in Madison County, Texas.

The project, located in the ERCOT North market, is expected to receive notice to proceed in the fourth quarter of 2025, with commercial operation scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. The project construction is expected to begin in Q4 2025.

Savion, a Shell subsidiary, originally developed the project. The acquisition marks Energy Vault’s first project to be formally acquired through its Asset Vault investment platform. The project will be supported by the recently announced $300 million preferred equity investment from Orion Infrastructure Capital, as well as the monetization of Federal Investment Tax Credit-related funds.

Energy Vault is currently negotiating with a counterparty for an 8-year offtake agreement for the project. The offtake structure is expected to be underwritten by an investment-grade counterparty. The BESS will use Energy Vault’s third-generation B-VAULT™ AC product.

“SOSA represents the caliber of bankable, cash-flow generating assets that Asset Vault was designed to capture,” said Chris Leary, Head of Infra Equity, OIC. “Energy Vault’s proven ability to execute on projects with strong fundamentals and long-term revenue visibility reinforces why we’re committed to supporting their growth as they build a portfolio of owned and operated energy storage assets that deliver predictable returns.”

In August 2025, the company received Foreign Investment Review Board approval and completed the full acquisition of the 125 MW/1,000 MWh Stoney Creek battery energy storage project in Northern New South Wales, Australia.

According to Mercom’s 9M and Q3 2025 Funding and M&A Report for Energy Storage report, there were 45 energy storage project M&A transactions in the first nine months of 2025 compared to 22 transactions in the same period of 2024.
