Eelpower Energy, an energy storage project developer backed by Equitix, Aware Super, and the National Wealth Fund, has acquired the 50 MW/100 MWh Stoneworthy battery storage project in Great Britain from renewable energy company RES.
The Stoneworthy project is located on land south of the Pyworthy substation in Devon. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with commercial operations starting in 2028.
The acquisition is Eelpower Energy’s fourth asset purchase since the company was formed in September 2025. The company said the acquisition is part of its plan to build a distributed portfolio of grid-scale flexible storage assets across Great Britain.
Burges Salmon advised the company as legal counsel. Everoze provided technical due diligence, Roadnight Taylor acted as grid consultant, and Eight Advisory advised on finance/ tax matters.
Mark Simon, Chief Executive of Eelpower Energy, said, “Stoneworthy is an important acquisition for Eelpower Energy and a strong addition to our growing battery storage portfolio. It demonstrates our ability to originate and execute attractive opportunities with high-quality counterparties such as RES, while underlining the commitment of Equitix, Aware Super, and the National Wealth Fund to investing in the infrastructure needed for a cleaner, more flexible, and more resilient electricity system in Great Britain.”
Eelpower Energy plans to invest £500 million (~$635 million) in flexible battery storage assets in Great Britain. The company also aims to build, own, and operate more than 1 GW of grid-scale battery storage assets in the coming years, planning to become an owner-operator of flexibility assets on the Great Britain electricity system.
A total of 7.2 GW of energy storage projects were acquired in Q1 2026, a 227% increase compared to the 2.2 GW in Q1 2025, according to Mercom’s recently released Q1 2026 Energy Storage Funding and M&A report. A growing share of acquisitions included standalone battery storage and hybrid solar-plus-storage projects.
In May 2026, GridStor, a developer and operator of utility-scale battery energy storage projects, acquired the 199 MW/796 MWh Birdseye battery storage project in Adams County, Colorado, from Accelergen. The project’s commercial operations date is planned for the end of 2028, with construction expected to begin as early as 2027.
