Cure.fit, a health and fitness company, has acquired Onyx, a fitness app that uses on-device computer vision and AI to track exercises, for an undisclosed amount.
Onyx is backed by VCs, fitness executives, and AI experts.
Based in India, Cure.fit was recently launched in the US with its energy-meter tech wherein the phone camera tracks users’ movements as they try to follow guided content from trainers. Users can track their improvement, compete with their friends, post selfies, and follow their favorite trainer
Onyx specializes in body tracking technology and the personalization of workout feedback.
Onyx describes its technology as “the world’s first 3D motion capture system on phone” and says it can track “nearly any exercise,” from squats to planks, push-ups, kicks, and running jumping in place. The user places a smartphone in a location capable of seeing the full body during exercise, and the app uses computer vision and artificial intelligence technology to render the user as a silhouette while automatically comparing torso and limb motions against ideal representations.
Shamik Sharma, Head of Technology at Cure.fit, said: “With this tech, our digital product will be very similar to attending a group class at the boutique studio or a personal training session in the gym. Users will get feedback on their movements, and it will be a two-way interactive experience. We are integrating with all display devices like Apple TV, Chromecast, etc., and users can follow a variety of exercises like dance, HIIT, yoga, etc. from their home.”
This is the second acquisition by Cure.fit. In 2018, CureFit acquired Bengaluru-based mental health and wellness services provider Seraniti. The terms of the acquisition were undisclosed.
A total of 184 digital health companies were acquired in 2020, compared to 169 in 2019, a 9% increase in M&A activity in year-over-year, according to Mercom’s Q4 and 2020 Digital Health Funding and M&A Report.
