Lyten Acquires Battery Manufacturing Operation from Northvolt

Lyten, a lithium-sulfur battery developer, announced the acquisition of Dwa Energy Storage System (ESS) manufacturing operation in Gdansk, Poland, from energy storage solutions provider Northvolt.

The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed by either party and are expected to close in Q3 2025.

In late 2024, Northvolt announced the intended sale of its Northvolt Systems business unit as part of its strategic review and bankruptcy procedures.

The deal includes a 270,000 sq ft manufacturing and R&D facility, which is said to be one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in Europe and was part of Northvolt Systems. It includes equipment to ramp up to 6 GWh of energy storage manufacturing capacity, along with the footprint to expand to over 10 GWh in the future.

The company also announced the acquisition of a lithium-metal battery manufacturing facility and cell-making equipment from Northvolt-owned battery manufacturer Cuberg in November.

The acquisition is expected to accelerate Lyten’s expansion of lithium-sulfur batteries into Europe and increase production capacity to meet the growing demand for energy storage. Lyten plans to restart production to resume BESS sales and is expanding its product line to include the first BESS powered by lithium-sulfur batteries.

“The message we are hearing clearly from European customers is that they want energy storage systems manufactured in Europe using locally sourced supply chains free of geopolitical risk. Gdansk, Poland, is the perfect location to meet this need for Europe,” added Lars Herlitz, Lyten Chairman and Co-Founder.

In December, Lyten announced a $650M LOI from the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. to expand battery manufacturing and commence delivery of BESS to Emerging Market nations.

According to Mercom’s Q1 2025 Funding and M&A Report for Energy Storage, corporate energy storage M&A activity decreased, with one company acquired in Q1 2025 compared to eight in Q1 2024.
