I Squared Capital Acquires Majority Equity Interest in ENTEK

Activ8 Energies, an Ireland based solar panel provider, has acquired solar energy solutions provider, Low Carbon Energy (LCE).

Through this acquisition, Activ8, which is 50% owned by SSE Airtricity, a subsidiary of SSE, plans to double its turnover and installed solar capacity in the coming years as it aims to expand its service beyond Ireland with the goal of becoming a leading renewable energy provider for commercial and industrial sectors in the U.K.

As per the deal, Benedict Ennis will continue to lead the business as Managing Director, while founder Ged Ennis will remain as a non-executive director, providing strategic guidance.

Low Carbon Energy will continue operating under its existing brand in the near term, maintaining continuity for its existing customers while benefiting from Activ8’s resources and scale. Both teams are focused on a pipeline of projects across key industrial and commercial sectors.

“At SSE, we’re committed to helping businesses on their decarbonization journey and achieve long-term energy security. This partnership between Activ8 Solar Energies and Low Carbon Energy represents an exciting milestone, bringing together expertise and years of delivery experience in renewable projects,” said, Jon Kirby, Head of Development at SSE.

Founded in 2009, Low Carbon Energy is stated to have worked across more than 300 sites nationwide, delivering more than 60 MW of installed solar capacity. The company’s client portfolio includes BMW, Porsche, Co-op, Boeing, Drax Power, Tata Steel, Wickes, United Utilities, and the NHS.

According to Mercom’s 1H and Q2 2025 Solar Funding and M&A report, in the first half, there were 50 solar M&A transactions, compared to 40 in the first half of 2024.

In June, AMPYR Distributed Energy, an investor in renewable energy solutions and part of the AGP Group,  announced the acquisition of Eden Sustainable, a solar PV developer, funder, installer, and O&M across the U.K. for commercial real estate.
