GridStor, a developer and operator of grid-scale battery energy storage systems, announced the acquisition of a 150 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage project in Texas from Balanced Rock Power, a U.S.-based solar and energy storage project developer.
The project in Hidalgo County, Texas, is expected to reach commercial operation by the summer of 2026. According to Gridstor, the project will improve the resilience of the Lower Rio Grande Valley region of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas power system.
This transaction marks the fourth acquisition by GridStor in the past 12 months and the second acquisition from Balanced Rock Power.
“Battery storage is the fastest, scalable solution to provide reliability in the near term to the Texas power system and its largest industries,” said Chris Taylor, CEO of GridStor. “Batteries provide energy that stabilizes the ERCOT electric grid and supplies its hours of greatest demand every day. Our acquisition demonstrates GridStor’s commitment to roll up our sleeves and build facilities that help Texas sustain its historic economic expansion.”
“BRP is proud to continue supporting GridStor in their efforts to support industrial expansion with utility-scale battery storage,” said John Knight, CEO of Balanced Rock Power. “Together with GridStor, we are building reliable and affordable energy solutions today for a powerful tomorrow.”
In January 2025, the company announced the completion of the acquisition of a 100 MW/400 MWh energy battery storage project from Capacity Power Group.
According to Mercom’s Annual and Q4 2024 Funding and M&A Report for Energy Storage and Smart Grid, 38 energy storage projects were acquired in 2024. By comparison, 2023 had 28 project M&A transactions.
In November 2024, Alpiq, a Switzerland-based electricity producer, announced the acquisition of the 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage project located in the department of Oise, north of Paris, France, from Harmony Energy, a renewable energy project developer.
