Solar in India Generated 8.4 Billion Units of Electricity in the Eight Month Period from April to November 2016; 87% increase over the same period in 2015

Solar energy now accounts for 1 percent of the total electricity generated in India and 14.3 percent of total renewable power generated in the country. During the eight-month period from April to November in 2016, solar accounted for 8,436.06 million units of electricity, according the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Compared to the eight-month period from April to November in 2015, solar generated 3,917 million more units.

According to Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker, over 4 GW of solar has been commissioned this year compared to 2.3 GW in all of 2015. With solar installations forecasted at more than 9 GW in CY 2017, the share of solar power generation is expected to continue increasing.
