Wind Off to a Slow Start with Q1 VC Investments Coming in at Only $9 Million
Mercom Capital Group, llc, a global clean energy communications and
consulting firm, today released funding and merger and acquisition
(M&A) activity for the wind energy sector for the first quarter of
VC investments in the Wind sector was down in the first quarter of 2011
with only $9 million raised in two deals, compared to $59 million in
three deals in Q4 of 2010.
Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the Wind sector amounted to
$265 million in five deals which was up compared to $140 million in
four deals in Q4 of 2010. Of the five deals in Q1 2011, only one was
disclosed, the American Semiconductor's acquisition of The Switch.
There were 11 announced large-scale project funding deals amounting to
$1.2 billion compared to $4.9 billion in 21 project funding deals in Q4
2010. Ten of the 11 deals were onshore projects and one was offshore.
The top projects funded were the $553 million loan to Renova Energia,
$255 million in debt to Edison Mission Energy, the $120 million loan to
Brookfield Renewable Power, the $111 million loan to Energie
Baden-Wurttemberg and the $62 million loan to AES Wind Generation.
